DC Shorts Film Competition, September 19, 2014.
I was a finalist for the DC Shorts Screenplay Competition in 2014 for my short film Parallel, a story which focuses on gentrification after a Brooklyn native’s interaction with a new resident of her neighborhood gets her local bodega shut down…. click for rest of article.

Cell-cultured meat is an alluring concept. Efficiently-grown meat—not a plant-based protein—that’s slaughter-free, antibiotic-free, and better for the environment. It sounds almost too good to be true, but these are the promises touted by leaders in the cultured meat space. And with a problematic agriculture system and rising global food insecurity—cell-cultured meat innovation seems like it’s coming right on time…. click for rest of article.

For decades, K-pop has thrived in Asian markets and in other parts of the world like Latin America. But there was always one pop market it couldn’t quite penetrate—the US. The US and UK have produced the best-selling artists of all time, making English-language music a powerful mainstream force. No matter where in the world you are, you’re bound to hear a top 40 US or UK hit blaring—but it’s rare to be able to say the same in reverse…. click for rest of article.

Dr. Daniel Barrett, a board-certified surgeon in Beverly Hills, isn’t your average Instagram influencer. Sure, his feed is carefully curated. He has a tricked out iPhone and a high-quality video camera to craft polished “stories” for his hungry fans. He even has a social media team. But, Dr. Barrett isn’t reviewing makeup palettes or snapping pictures of latte art. He’s recording live surgery… click for rest of article.

Viva Ruiz is many things: an artist, a creator, queer, Catholic, and proud to have had two abortions. Thank God for Abortion is the organization Ruiz created in 2015 after abortion clinics nationwide were shuttering due to bureaucratic minefields such as TRAP laws. Her organization created a float to be part of 2018’s NYC Pride parade on June 24, which highlighted the need for access to abortion within the queer community… click for rest of article.

I’ll be honest, I think I wear more makeup than my genetically blessed and baby-skinned coworkers. I have rampant adult acne, y’all! It’s OK, I’m not that bitter. Not everyone can radiate sunshine out of their pores. And while I’m not over here wearing a dramatically contoured face everyday (because really who has the time), to me Glossier’s Skin Tint is more of a punchline than a viable make-up product… click for rest of article.

Nia DaCosta has known she’s wanted to be a director since she was 16 years old, because, as she put it in our interview, “I realized they’re the ones doing all the ‘stuff.’ DaCosta has officially achieved her goal. In late April, her first feature film Little Woods premiered to adoring crowds at Tribeca Film Festival. It’s an unshakably strong thriller about two sisters set in a North Dakotan oil boom town, and it landed DaCosta the festival’s Nora Ephron Award, which is given to women filmmakers who embody the spirit of the late writer… click for rest of article.

“It was never my dream to be a model,” Jocelyn Corona said when she visited the Jezebel studio last week. “It was more like to be like a Miss Universe... I was always thinking that I was too big to be a model, so I was never even thinking of the possibility to become one.”… click for rest of article.

In a Bushwick, Brooklyn venue called Secret Project Robot, about a hundred people, mostly women, cram themselves into an otherwise spacious room and wait for the next question. This is L Word Trivia, a semi-regular queer night started by Minnie Bennett, a filmmaker, and Lily Marotta, an actress/comedian, after the pair noticed they couldn’t stop talking to each other about the iconic 2002 series. Though mostly confident that the event would garner some interest, neither was entirely prepared for the enthusiasm and following it would generate… click for rest of article.

With Thor: Ragnarok hitting theaters November 3rd, Cate Blanchette’s Hela and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie join the ranks of woman action stars who need a little lift to throw down. You see, when the world needs saving, cinematic heroines still have to bring their A game—and by that I mean their most fashion-forward heels. Running from literal dinosaurs, hunting down mutant vampires, intricate sword fights, or an alien battle royale isn’t an excuse to let your ensemble suffer, ladies. Who wants to see a combat boot kick its way to victory? Gross!… click for rest of article.

This year marked the 25th anniversary of a woman’s right to go topless in the state of New York. As a lifelong resident of New York, and a 25-year-old myself, I grew up with this law, but only learned of its existence this year. The reason for that is pretty obvious to anyone with boobs—if bare breasts in public are legal then so are the unwarranted public reactions to them… click for rest of article.
